WIP Wednesday: The Ladybug Top

I've been spending some quality time with some of the fabric I showed you on Sunday. The Girl's birthday party is in 11 days, so this morning I set out to finish up her top. If push comes to shove, I'll pair it with leggings or something, though I intend to make some coordinating pants.

It was my first time using a Brownie-Goose pattern. The Lazy Susan pattern is versatile with a number of different options. I decided on a top with flutter sleeves. My biggest challenge was the very short seam on the side of the bodice (since I'm making size 18 months of the top version). I think next time for a top this small I'd just use the dress bodice with the top skirt. It would be 3/4" longer, but less picky than working with those teeny seams.

So without further ado, a few pictures of my morning progress with a sneak peek of the finished top. (Stay tuned for full pictures after her party.) The process pictures can be summed up with: use LOTS of pins when sewing ruffles!

And attaching the "skirt" to the bodice.

sneak previewWish I'd noticed those couple threads before now. :-/ Anyway, I love the flutter sleeves. (Oh, if you look closely, you can see the tiny little 3/16" (if that) vertical seam on the side of the bodice under her arm.)

I'm linking up on Lee's WIP Wednesday post over on Freshly Pieced.

Update: The Ladybug ensemble is now complete.

She's pretty excited about it. She's been referring to the fabric as "my fabric" ever since I first showed it to her.

  2. I have a weakness for ladybugs. I have a whole bin full of ladybug fabrics I've been collecting awaiting quilt inspiration to use them. Even though I am lady bug biased I think that top is just adorable. And you did a great job on those ruffles. It is hard to get back into garment sewing after getting used to flat quilts.
Loved the turtle print, too, from your Sunday Stash post.

Thanks Diane! I have some cute multicolored ladybug fabric in my stash that is itching to be part of a quilt. I'm starting to feel fairly confidant about sewing garments for my little people, but the thought of sewing something for myself is intimidating. (A woman's body is a little more tricky than a toddler/preschooler.)

  3. Oh my that is to die for!!! I love those flutter sleeves, and the whole thing beautiful. I am just getting into sewing clothes for my baby girl and this makes me want to find a pattern with flutter sleeves and make it!!

Thank you, Kate. This pattern was great. My only suggestion (like I mentioned) is to lengthen the bodice a little if you're making the top version in a small size. Just realized that my daughter's first birthday dress had flutter sleeves too... AND it was red, black and white. That one was a little more involved though. ;-)
