TGIFF: More Zippered Pouches

Welcome to those of you who are here to share a finish with TGIFF or to check out what everyone else has been up to. I'm excited to be hosting Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday! On Tuesday I showed you my first little Open Wide Zippered Pouches. I think I could easily become addicted. (There will certainly be some made as gifts soon.) Such a nice fast project! Participating in the Open Wide Pouch Swap on Instagram was a lot of fun. I've really enjoyed watching people share their creative ideas. I'm looking forward to the arrival of my package.

I knew that I wanted to piece the outer panels for the pouch I was sending to my partner. And, how can a person go wrong with Alison Glass fabric? So I used the her Mercury prints and designed a rainbow panel for the outside. I have to say, I'm kind of in love with it and it was really hard to send away. Perhaps I will make myself something similar.

The pattern from Noodlehead has three sizes and includes measurements for a pouch with one fabric on the exterior or a pouch with a contrast bottom (two exterior fabrics). I started with this option but knew I wanted more "work room" for the piecing in my upper section, so I made my contrast bottom pieces smaller (5.5" tall) to accommodate this change. This left me 6.5" by 14" (unfinished) for my upper section.

I don't have process pictures/diagrams, but here are my measurements for the upper portion of my pouch (for one side).

The upper (attached to the zipper) text piece is 14" wide by 2" tall.

The lower (attached to the black print *with a 1/2" seam allowance*) text piece is 14" wide by 2.25" tall.

The pieces for the rainbow panel in the middle are 3.25" tall. The text pieces are .75" wide; the 5 colored panels in the center are 1.75" wide; the blue and pink end pieces are 3.5" wide. When I pieced them I pressed the seams to the colored pieces with a 1/4" seam allowance. I trimmed this strip to 14" once it was pieced. Then I attached it to the upper and lower text pieces with a 1/4" seam allowance. From here I continued with the directions on the Noodlehead tutorial.

I also had scraps from the awesome rainbow fabric large enough to make a small sized pouch... well almost. I pieced in a black and white strip of fabric to stretch my scraps to be large enough. I used the same black and white print for the lining. I thought I was making this to give away. Now I'm not so sure. ;-)

Your projects continue to delight me with the colors (you have a great and even growing eye for them) and the creative ways you put it all together. I'm sure those bags will make *any* owner happy!

Thank you, Marji. I'm having so much fun. I started a new quilt with navy, lime green and teal. I'm loving the pile of fabric. Now to find time to work on it. ;-)

Thanks, Marly. I'm in hot pursuit of more of that fabric. If I find more, maybe I'll be able to allow myself to part with it. ;-)

  3. I made one these recently too! My first pouch, and they're so much fun because they allow for a lot creativity. You could make these for the rest of your life and never be at a loss for design ideas. What's not to about this one with a rainbow, although I probably would have kept it! ;-)

I agree so much! And the amount of time start to finish, even if you piece the side panels is so much shorter than a quilt! Win!! Thanks for visiting!

  4. Fun fabric combos you've used! I know exactly what you mean by hesitating on whether or not to give it away when you're finished. I waffle, but usually I find a reason someone else needs it more than I do. : ) It's so nice to share the love.

I agree. I think a couple small zipper pouches are slated for an upcoming IG giveaway. (@sarahmgoer) Thanks for visiting.

  5. I always say I am going to replicate an item I made from a swap, but I rarely seem to have the same time for my own creations. The pillow I share today is an example...like how I don't actually own a big pillow form. I like how you separated the rainbow sections in your first pouch.

Thanks, Leanne. Sometimes great design is born out of necessity. Not enough fabric... just piece in something in the middle. ;-)

  6. Those are both lovely pouches, Sarah! I won some zippers from ZipIt and have not used any of them yet. Thanks so much for the inspiration.... And for being such a wonderful TGIFF host!

Their zippers are awesome! So many beautiful color choices. The open wide pouches are a quick and easy project. The three different sizes make it such a versatile tutorial. Have fun! I look forward to seeing what you make with your zippers.

These are very indicative of what my stash looks like: saturated, bold color. ;-) I love all of Alison's fabric. Such great colors. Joining the Alison Glass Mini Swap on IG forced me to have to add to my stash since I didn't have much of her fabric before that. Now to get to work on that mini! Thank you for visiting, Jenn!

I bought it initially to back this quilt, but quickly regretted not buying more (like the whole bolt!). I'm working on tracking down more. :-) Thanks for visiting!

Thank you so much, Lucy! I'm glad I didn't have enough of the rainbow fabric for that piece. It forced me to add something to make it work. :-)

  7. Oh my! I absolutely LOVE these pouches period... but LOVE what you did with yours and all of the COLOR! I especially love the rainbow one with the interior... that is just eye popping! What is that fabric if you don't mind? I might have to snag me some!

Thank you so much! The interior fabric in the top one is the same fabric I used on the exterior of the second. I'm trying to track down the info on the fabric. I bought it at a quilt show and the selvage didn't have any manufacturer info on it. I'd like a whole bolt! :-)

Thanks, Cindy. It is such a quick project. Certainly more so if you don't do any piecing on the side panels. ;-)

Glad you like them, Rebecca! It's not a batik... it's actually the same fabric inside that one that's on the outside of the smaller pouch. I'm trying to get my hands on more of it! I love it even more after using it! :-)

  8. Love the fabrics you chose! I have several zip pouches, and while I love making and gifting them I always have a hard time using them...they just kind of layout :-/ I keep wondering what other people keep in theirs?

Thank you, Renee. I have a large size open wide pouch that I received as a gift. I keep my zippers in it on a shelf in my craft area. I gave my son one of the small pouches that I made with the mushroom fabric. He's keeping all of his small animal figures in it. I know some of my bridesmaids use their little zipper pouches for makeup. Just a few ideas! :-)

  9. Aren't they so fun? I love the rainbow-y one. I need to make some more patchwork ones. I'm thinking of doing my favorite quilt blocks for them. Great finishes!

Thank you, Jennie. I'd like to piece some more, too, but it really can make them much longer to make. ;-)
