Two years ago, my son I started making these 8 1/2" monochromatic blocks from my scraps. As with many of my projects, these were set aside in favor of other projects... to be worked on from time to time over the last couple years. I finished it up in October just in time to send to my niece for her 2nd birthday. (I also finished her "baby" quilt.)

The project consists of twelve 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" scrappy slab blocks in monochromatic primary and secondary colors. I prioritized fabrics that had animals and other items, fussy cutting when possible.

I made each page by joining a piece of 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" batting with two blocks by stitching around three sides with blocks right side together. After turning the page right side out I topstitched around those edges, leaving open the edge that would go into the spine. I opted not to quilt the pages.

Then I machine stitched pages together two at a time, then combined those. Four pages (that's four layers of batting and 8 layers of fabric!) was the thickest my machine could handle so I hand sewed the two halves together.

I was just making it up as I went from there. I chose the last of my favorite rainbow print from Timeless Treasures for the front and back covers and finishing the spine. I opted for hand stitching and a little hot glue to cover the corners of the spine, then used a hand binding to cover the spine. This spine is a little more than 1/2" thick.

Scrap projects are full of memories. As I flip through this book, I am reminded of so many projects I've made.

Ladybug outfits for my kids, Aloha Fizz, Bold Blooms...

Text Me, Wizard of Oz, Candy Shoppe, Rubber Duck...

Between working on my Improv Tumblers and some charity blocks today I finished another scrappy block to go with the other three that my son and I have made.

One of my favorite parts about sewing with scraps is the memories of other projects. My favorite print here is the mushroom print in the middle. This fabric was originally used to make pants for my son when he was much littler than he is now, which I shared in my very first blog post nearly five years ago. I've also made some other projects with that fabric. It just makes me smile.

This is my 14th blog post in as many days as part of the 31 Day Blog Writing Challenge. My son and I are working on a little scrap sewing project. The first step of our project was to sort through all of my bags of scraps. (My scraps are currently housed by color in gallon zip lock bags.) It's a bit of an "I Spy" project, so we wanted to pull any interesting scraps that had fun pictures on them. In a few cases, we pulled a piece of interesting fabric from my stash, like those awesome giraffes that I haven't used anywhere yet. We're piecing them together in monochromatic blocks which are rounded out with any other scraps in that color. You'll see from these scrap blocks that the majority of my stash (and scraps) are blenders, so most of my fabrics read as one color.

I had previously finished an orange block.

In the last couple days my son (age 8) has been itching to sew. He picked out some of the yellow and green scraps, trimmed and created the layout of each block and did all the machine sewing to piece these blocks. I assisted by pressing seams and trimming edges where necessary to have a straight edge to sew.

These blocks are each 8 1/2" unfinished. I just love working with scraps from previous projects. The orange butterflies are from an Pretty Ditty Apron I made as a gift last year. One of the orange blenders was from the Midnight Mystery quilt. The yellow alphabet fabric was from the Text Me swap I participated in. A couple of the yellow fabrics were scraps from one of my favorite early projects, Candy Shoppe, and the yellow brick fabric was used on the Wizard of Oz quilt I made for my nephew. My son used that green print on the left edge in the Ocean Quilt he made for my daughter and the turtles are on the back of his first quilt, Jungle of Animals. Scrap projects are full of memories.
